Registered Veterinary Technician, June 2019

Greenbank Animal Hospital has a full time Registered Veterinary Technician position available for a one-year maternity leave contract. We are a very busy practice with two locations and a total of 8 veterinarians. We currently have 6 RVTs employed full time and 2 Veterinary Assistants. We have digital full body and dental radiographs, pulse oximetry, doppler etc. The ideal candidate should have strong technical skills as well as a team oriented, friendly and outgoing personality. We use our technicians heavily in the areas of anesthesia induction/maintenance, patient care, pain management as well as in their own appointments for nail trims, anal glands, blood work, etc. with lots of responsibilities, independence and client contact. The position will require some weekend and evening shifts on a regular basis and some shifts at our sister clinic in Manotick (Village of Manotick Animal Hospital). Salary is commensurate with experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Check and monitor medical and post-op cases. Provide treatment, prepare and administer meds as necessary.

  • Organize and update daily activities for the Veterinarian

  • Set-up for Surgery including equipment preparation and set-up ie. anaesthetic machines

  • Update Veterinarian on patient status and make arrangements for patient discharge

  • Prepare and complete admission and treatment (ICU, anaesthesia, etc.) documentation

  • Assist with the feeding, cleaning and walking of patients

  • Restrain and prepare patients for treatment, examination or meds.

  • Assist during and post surgery including assist with anaesthesia, post op injections, clean-up, update narcotic, surgery and observation logs, clean dental and surgical instruments

  • Insert catheters and initiate fluid therapy

  • Updates owners on patient status, discharge plans or any additional instructions/estimates

  • Complete, develop and mount x-rays and log data

  • Support Veterinarian by doing nail trims and suture removals from routine surgeries as required.

  • Collect/test lab samples.- urinalysis and run blood work.

  • May take appointments for surgical patients, nail trims, and other procedures or tests.

Qualifications:

  • College Diploma from a recognized Veterinary Technician Program

  • Licensed as a Registered Veterinary Technician

  • Demonstrated high-level skill and competence in anesthesia, anesthetic monitoring and post-operative care and pain management

  • Team-oriented, professional and friendly demeanour with seasoned customer service skills

  • Demonstrated ability to provide timely, consistent and adequate animal care

  • Ability to schedule and prioritize multiple tasks

  • Strong verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to share information and provide feedback with appropriate sensitivity, judgement and accuracy

  • Proven attention to detail and ability to accurately/efficiently document and transfer data

  • Strong computer application skills- Microsoft Office; practice management software

  • Must be able to work flexible hours including evenings and some weekends
